A startling 340% difference in performance found among the top European IaaS cloud providers

The European Cloud Service Providers 2016 Report is the most in-depth analysis of the European IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) marketplace ever conducted. Nearly four million data points were collected on 19 qualified IaaS providers with data centers in Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland.  Testing was done for four different VM sizes; measuring vCPU, memory performance, and block storage performance.

Organizations looking to make a strategic investment into IaaS must understand how price and performance can vary widely between providers, and across workloads and resources —thus greatly affecting total cost of ownership.

European Cloud Service Providers: Key Findings

Enterprises frequently calculate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through the raw cost of infrastructure and features. This report cautions against doing so without also examining performance. Findings from the report include:
  •  A startling 340% difference in performance among the top 10 Providers, emphasizes the need for performance testing to understand value and calculate TCO.
  • Small VM's from some Providers out-perform Large VM's of other Providers. Providing critical insight into cost-saving opportunities by utilizing fewer resources for some applications.
  • Testing of public cloud infrastructure over an extended duration exposed significant variability with some Providers. SAN disk performance variability was more noticeable than vCPU and memory performance.
